As Jung observed,…‘Man’s worse sin is unconsciousness, but it is indulged in with the greatest piety’…In the end, having a more interesting life, a life that disturbs complacency, a life that pulls us out of the comfortable and thereby demands a larger spiritual engagement than we planned or that feels comfortable, is what matters most.” James Hollis from What Matters Most: Living a More Considered Life

If we fail to engage in some form of cogent dialogue with the questions which emerge from our depths, then we will live an unconscious, unreflective, accidental life.” –James Hollis from What Matters Most: Living a More Considered Life

In the evening session, Dr. James Hollis will introduce participants to the characteristics of a more considered life. While relationships, love, honor, good work and reputation are important, what really matters most is: exploring shock and awe-that life not be governed by fear; saving appearances-that we learn to tolerate ambiguity; and starving in abundance-that we consider feeding the soul. During the day-long workshop, Dr. Hollis will lead participants into the depths of the most important aspects of life: that we respect the power of Eros; that we step into largeness; that we risk growth over security; that we find and follow the path of creativity and delight in foolish passions; that we engage spiritual crises and other “bad days at the office”; that we write our own story; that we fight fate and love it also; that we live more fully in the shadow of mortality; and that we accept that our home is our journey, and our journey is our home. It is having wrestled with these issues, having kept the mystery before us, that is what matters most.

HollisJames Hollis, Ph.D., has a compelling gift for distilling complex literary, artistic, historical, philosophical and scientific material and conveying their symbolic essence. He is a Zurich-trained, licensed Jungian analyst in private practice in Houston, Texas, where he served as Executive Director of the Jung Educational Center of Houston. He is a retired Senior Training Analyst for the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, was the first Director of Training of the Philadelphia Jung Institute, and is Vice President Emeritus of the Philemon Foundation (dedicated to the publication of the complete works of Jung). He is also Director of the Jungian Studies program of San Francisco’s Saybrook Graduate School, the first degree-granting program focusing on original Jungian texts. Dr. Hollis is one of the most widely published Jungian authors with 13 books, including Archetypal Imagination, Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life, and his most recent work, What Matters Most: Living a More Considered Life. His works have already been translated into 13 languages.

Learning Objectives: Following the completion of this program, participants will be able to:

1.     Define what is most important in life, in one’s own and in the lives of one’s clients;

2.     Redefine what actually matters most as the consideration of ambiguity;

3.     Comprehend the power of projection of unclaimed shadow issues in oneself and in one’s clients;

4.     Understand the need for honoring but wrestling with the fear and lethargy behind our modern obsessions with materialism, hedonism, and narcissism;

5.     Recognize our need to connect and relate to others, in one’s own life and in the lives of one’s clients;

6.     Identify the importance of moving beyond the comfort level into largeness, in one’s own life and in
one’s clients’ lives;

7.     Cultivate the genuinely creative in oneself and in one’s clients; and

8.     Experience the burden and freedom that comes with accepting our mysterious journey
